Complete Surf Fishing Courses 2024-2025

American Sea Fishing offers complete Surf Fishing courses for Southern California that are perfect for beginners and seasoned anglers alike, covering beaches in Orange County, Los Angeles County, Malibu, Long Beach, Seal Beach and San Diego County.

 

Our comprehensive courses cover everything you need to know to get started with surf fishing, from the basics of gear and tackle to reading tides and structure for a wide range of species over a series of one-on-one private sessions. All are hosted by a professional, CDFW-licensed fishing guide and include all tackle hire, equipment and bait. Just turn up and fish.

 

We believe that anyone can learn to fish the surf, and that it’s important to pass on this tradition to present and future generations so they too can have the experience of fishing the beautiful beaches of California. Course 1 – Four Guided sessions

Course 1 consists of four guided sessions covering the main tactics and tackle you'll need to catch fish from the surf all year round in California. As with all of our courses, you can book several sessions close together for a condensed learning experience, or spread them out.

Week 1
Surf Perch

Surf perch are a great way to learn the basics of beach casting in California and session one with your professional guide will focus primarily on catching surf perch using rigs, tactics and tackle that are fun and easy to master regardless of skill set.

Week 2
Corbina

With some new skills and knowledge in the locker after week 1, you'll target larger fish from the surf on your second session including California corbina, spotfin croaker and yellowfin croaker to develop skills in reading the water, choosing baits, casting, playing fish, finding sand crabs and rigging.

Week 3
Halibut

With the confidence to target larger fish developing further, your next session will involve a trophy game fish in California - the halibut. You'll get an in-depth tuition on the key lure and live-bait tactics and tackle you need to land a prized specimen plus saltwater bass on session 3.

Week 4
Sharks

Fishing for sharks from the beach is a great way of taking your surf fishing to the next level by learning how to target, setup and handle species like leopard sharks, soupfin sharks and bat rays.

Course 2 – Six Guided sessions

Course 2 consists of six guided sessions going in-depth on all the tactics and tackle you'll need to catch fish from the surf all year round in California. As with all of our courses, you can book several sessions close together for a condensed learning experience, or spread them out.

Week 1
Surf Perch

Week 4
Saltwater Bass

Saltwater bass - primarily spotted bay bass, sand bass and white seabass - are fun and challenging to target on artificial baits, and this session will take a deep dive into the setups and tactics that catch these aggressive predators in SoCal. 

Week 5
Leopard Sharks & Rays

With the confidence and skills to handle different surf species expanding, fishing for leopard sharks from the beach is a great way of taking your surf fishing to the next level by learning how to setup and handle species like smaller sharks and rays.

Week 6
Soupfin Sharks & Night Fishing

Perhaps the most challenging form of surf fishing in California is targeting predatory fish from the beach at night with species such as soupfin sharks and monster rays regular catches.

 

You'll learn how to safely fish at night with a professional guide with a masterclass on surf shark fishing in darkness - who knows what you'll catch?

Pricing and Booking Complete Surf Fishing Courses

Course 1
Four Sessions

  • Four private guided surf fishing tuition sessions with a CDFW-licensed guide

  • Each session is roughly four hours long for a total of 16 hours guided fishing

  • Comprehensive info sheets and setup guides

  • Ongoing help with buying tackle, session planning etc

  • Cost: $900 (saving $125+ compared to booking lessons separately)

Course 2
Six Sessions

  • Six private guided surf fishing tuition sessions with a CDFW-licensed guide

  • Each session is roughly four hours long for a total of 24 hours guided fishing

  • Comprehensive info sheets and setup guides

  • Ongoing help with buying tackle, session planning etc

  • Cost $1400 (saving $200+ compared to booking sessions separately)
